Thinking About Joining the Capitol Street Team? What is Street Team? What are the rules? Do I get paid to be on the Street Team? If I don't get paid, what's in it for me? Does it cost anything to join the street team? Why do I have to sign up for the street team, and then also sign up for the artists team sites? What if I want to quit? What if I agree to cover a show and then have a last minute emergency that prevents me from going? What is a lifestyle account? What are these "tools" you're always talking about? I'm on several street teams. Is that a problem? When I'm working a show for Capitol, can I hand out fliers for my band/my friend's band/another record label/etc.? What will you send me when I join? What's a "like-artist show"? What does covering a show involve? What's a recap? What kind of personal information do I have to provide to join? What will you do with that information? What is the Street Team? The street team is a group of music loving volunteers who promote Capitol artists in their area in return for concert tickets and other perks. If you love telling people about bands you love and you want some experience in the music industry, the Capitol Records Street Team might be for you!
| ||
What are the rules? The rules are pretty simple and easy to follow. They are: 1. When working a Capitol show, you can only promote Capitol artists. 2. You are responsible for covering a show and writing a recap in return or your ticket. 3. Recaps are due within 24 hours of your show or event. 4. Be nice to your fellow Capitol teamers, as well as the fans and other street teamers you meet at shows. That's about it!
If I don't get paid, what's in it for me? You'll be helping to spread the word about your favorite bands. While doing that, you can earn points to redeem for cool prizes like shirts and signed items. You will also receive concert tickets and other perks. Plus, you'll be gaining some great experience in the music industry and meeting some cool people.
| ||
Why do I have to sign up for the street team, and then also sign up for the artists team sites? Signing up for the street team puts you in our database, and makes you an official member of the team. You will be able to log into the website, and view the news items for the artists. To actually participate and sign up for shows, you'll need to join the artist team pages. When you are registered for certain artists sites, you may also be able to participate in surveys, have access to exclusive music, etc. It is easy, free, and it guarantees you will have access to every area of the Capitol Street Team website. There is no limit as to how many you can sign up for, so why not register for every artist?
| ||
What does covering a show involve? If it's a Capitol artist, you will have to arrive early to hang posters before doors open, and then hand out tools afterwards. If it's a like-artist show, you will only need to hand out tools afterward. All shows require that a recap be written and sent in within 24 hours of the show.
| ||
What's a recap? A recap is a short one-page review of what you did. When you cover a show, you'll need to fill in information like the name of the venue, the capacity, and the fans reactions to the tools you were handing out. You will need to fill out a recap anytime you visit a store or cover a show.
| ||
What will you do with that information? First of all, we will never sell it or give it to anyone who's going to spam you. We keep a confidential database of street team members-only Capitol employees have access to this information. We communicate mostly by email, although we will sometimes call about urgent or upcoming events. We need your address so that we can send you tools.
| ||
How do I sign up for a team site? Signing up for a team site is simple. First, log in. On the main page, you will see a list of all our artists on your left, and then 2 options for each artist. Click "TEAM SITE," and then it will say "You have already logged in. Click here to enter the team site." Once you click that, the application page will come up. Just fill it out, and submit it. Then we will approve you, and you will have access to that area!
| ||
Why can't I log into a team site? If you recently signed up for a team site, you probably are not approved yet. The survey's you fill out we read, and then we approve you for access to the site. If you cannot log into the site, it does NOT mean we rejected you, it just means we haven't got to your survey yet. Please be patient! Usually, the longest it takes us is 3 days. If it has been significantly longer than that, and you are still having problems, please contact us by email or phone, we will be happy to help!
| ||
When we're filling out activity logs and it asks for our name at the top, do you mean our real name or our login name? We need you to put your full name in the ?name? field. First and last please. Otherwise when we get the activity log sent to us (when you submit it), it just lists your username and says "submitted by KillingbirdRules" - we don't always know who that is, so that's why we ask for your name.
| ||
Do I need to send pictures with my recap?
It's not required, but we love to see the work you are doing! For each good picture you submit with your recap, you will receive 2 points, with a 3 picture limit. So you can earn an additional 5 points per show! Here is what we mean by "good" pictures:
- NO POSED PICTURES! Posed pictures means fans holding up stickers, posters, and posing for the camera. We like "action" shots. - Teamers handing out tools, hanging posters, talking to fans, etc. (ACTION!) - Posters on the walls, table toppers - Crowd shot of the band and their audience (no more than 1 picture per show please!) - Check out the pictures below, these are examples of good pictures! Get creative, and get us those "action" shots!
How do I set up a listening party?
It's easy:
- Find a venue that you want to have the party at. - Speak to someone in charge about setting up a party. If they're interested, let us know and we'll provide the tools. - Pick a date for the party - it could be a pre-existing night like the Saturday Night Britpop Night at a local club or Thursday Night Open Mic at a coffeeshop. - Advertise your party - make flyers, hang up posters, tell your friends, post a MySpace bulletin, etc. - Get to the venue early and decorate (put up posters and table toppers, etc.) - Give the DJ a copy of the album to play during the night. - Hang out, talk to people in the crowd, see what they think of the album, and take pictures - Send in your recap. That's about it, but you can also get creative and include things like themed drink specials, contests/giveaways, etc.
Where should I have it?
That depends on the band you're promoting. If its The Vines, a rock night at a local bar or club would work well. If its Corinne Bailey Rae, a coffeeshop would be a better fit. Setting up a listening party at a pre-existing night will help ensure that fans of that genre will be there. You can even throw your own listening party in a dorm or events center, skate park, etc.
| ||
How do I advertise?
You can make flyers and posters and post them around your city, on campuses and at schools, and in stores. You can also advertise online by posting MySpace bulletins or on a blog or sending out an email. Sometimes the venue you're working with will help by advertising the party on their mailing list or print advertising.
| ||
What tools will you send me?
We'll send you a copy of the album so you or the DJ can play it for everyone. We'll also send you stickers, posters, and table toppers (if available) so you can decorate the venue and advertise your party. If available, we'll also send you "premium items" like shirts, vinyl, etc. to use as giveaways.
| ||
What are "giveaways"?
To get people involved in your listening party, you can have contests or giveaways for a prize. There are several ways to do this. You can have everyone at the party put their name in a hat and then pull out a winner. Or you can give a prize to someone who answers a trivia question about the band correctly. We will send you items like shirts, vinyl, etc. to use as prizes.
| ||
How do I do "lifestyles"?
It's easy! You walk into the store and introduce yourself as a member of the Capitol Records Street Team. Then explain that you're promoting a band, and ask if the store would be willing to let you put a poster in the window, a cling in the window, stickers or postcards by the cash register or front door, etc. Most stores will help you out, although some have corporate policies that prevent them from allowing them to take tools. If the store lets you promote there, write down the name, address, and phone number of the store, and what you did to promote there. (Hint: It helps to take a business card from each place you visit.) Then send us that information in a Store Recap visit, and we'll award you the points. After doing this a few times, you'll get to know people at each store, and they'll know you.
| ||
What sort of stores should I go to?
That depends on what sort of band you're promoting. Hurt posters would work well in the window of a tattoo parlor. Saosin stickers could be left in a skate shop. Corinne Bailey Rae postcards would work best at a coffee shop or hair salon. Feel free to ask us if you need more direction on what type of places to visit.
| ||
Should I take pictures?
You can if you want, but after a while, all the pictures of stickers next to a cash register are going to start to look the same. But if you see or do something noteworthy (like putting up a poster in a window, or seeing someone wearing a Hurt shirt) feel free to take a picture and send it in with your recap.
