What is the Street Team?
The street team is a group of music loving volunteers who promote Capitol artists in their area in return for concert tickets and other perks. If you love telling people about bands you love and you want some experience in the music industry, the Capitol Records Street Team might be for you!
Go to Top
What are the rules?
The rules are pretty simple and easy to follow. They are:

1. When working a Capitol show, you can only promote Capitol artists.
2. You are responsible for covering a show and writing a recap in return or your ticket.
3. Recaps are due within 24 hours of your show or event.
4. Be nice to your fellow Capitol teamers, as well as the fans and other street teamers you meet at shows.

That's about it!

Go to Top
Do I get paid to be on the Street Team?
You won't get any money for being on the team. You will, however, get cool stuff like shirts, tickets, and other perks ? if you do a great job.
Go to Top
If I don't get paid, what's in it for me?
You'll be helping to spread the word about your favorite bands. While doing that, you can earn points to redeem for cool prizes like shirts and signed items. You will also receive concert tickets and other perks. Plus, you'll be gaining some great experience in the music industry and meeting some cool people.
Go to Top
Does it cost anything to join the street team?
There is no cost to join the street team.
Go to Top
Why do I have to sign up for the street team, and then also sign up for the artists team sites?
Signing up for the street team puts you in our database, and makes you an official member of the team. You will be able to log into the website, and view the news items for the artists. To actually participate and sign up for shows, you'll need to join the artist team pages. When you are registered for certain artists sites, you may also be able to participate in surveys, have access to exclusive music, etc. It is easy, free, and it guarantees you will have access to every area of the Capitol Street Team website. There is no limit as to how many you can sign up for, so why not register for every artist?
Go to Top
What if I want to quit?
Email us and ask to be removed from the database.
Go to Top
What if I agree to cover a show and then have a last minute emergency that prevents me from going?
Try to find a responsible friend to cover the show and write a recap afterwards. If you can't find someone call the office at 212.786.8955 or 323.871.5392.
Go to Top
What is a lifestyle account?
Lifestyle accounts are places where music fans hang out. That includes music stores, clothing stores, tattoo parlors, skate parks, etc. The kind of lifestyle store you'll be visiting depends on the kind of music you're promoting.
Go to Top
What are these "tools" you're always talking about?
When we say "tools," we mean the free promotional items that we give away to promote bands. We use everything from stickers to CD samplers to squirt guns to promote our artists.
Go to Top
I'm on several street teams. Is that a problem?
Nope! You can be on as many street teams as you want as long as you only work for Capitol at shows we send you to.
Go to Top
When I'm working a show for Capitol, can I hand out fliers for my band/my friend's band/another record label/etc.?
No, when you're working a show for Capitol, you can only hand out Capitol tools.
Go to Top
What will you send me when I join?
You will probably start with some tools to take to lifestyle stores. If you do a good job with that, you can start to cover Capitol and like-artist shows.
Go to Top
What's a "like-artist show"?
Sometimes we shows for artists on Capitol. Other times, we cover shows for artists who aren't signed to Capitol, but whose fans might like some of the bands that we have. When we say a "like-artist show," we mean a show by an artist signed to another label.
Go to Top
What does covering a show involve?
If it's a Capitol artist, you will have to arrive early to hang posters before doors open, and then hand out tools afterwards. If it's a like-artist show, you will only need to hand out tools afterward. All shows require that a recap be written and sent in within 24 hours of the show.
Go to Top
What's a recap?
A recap is a short one-page review of what you did. When you cover a show, you'll need to fill in information like the name of the venue, the capacity, and the fans reactions to the tools you were handing out. You will need to fill out a recap anytime you visit a store or cover a show.
Go to Top
What kind of personal information do I have to provide to join?
When you sign up for the street team, we will ask for you name, address, email, and phone number so that we can contact you regarding shows and events.
Go to Top
What will you do with that information?
First of all, we will never sell it or give it to anyone who's going to spam you. We keep a confidential database of street team members-only Capitol employees have access to this information. We communicate mostly by email, although we will sometimes call about urgent or upcoming events. We need your address so that we can send you tools.
Go to Top
What if I live outside the US?
Unfortunately, only people living in the US can join the Capitol Records Street Team now.
Go to Top
I still have more questions! What do I do?
You can contact the Street Team Office by email at streetteam@capitolrecords.com or by phone at 212.786.8955 (New York) or 323.871.5392 (LA)

Who is your official street team mascot?
Glad you asked! That's Gus, the street team horse. We keep him in the stable out back.
Go to Top
What if I have a recap for a like-artist show?
Fill out the recap on the page of the artist you were focusing on. For example, if you hand out mostly tools for Relient K but also some Fischerspooner stickers, you should fill out an Activity Log on the Relient K page.
Go to Top
What if I work several artists at a show? Do I have to fill out more than one recap?
You only need to submit one recap. Use the activity log for the artist you were focusing on.
Go to Top
Who do I send my recaps to?
Our recaps should be posted through the website. Log on to the appropriate artist page and choose "Store Visit" or "Concert Recap". Fill out the form and submit - that's it! We'll either accept it or ask you for more information.
Go to Top
Where do I find the recap/activity log forms?
Log onto the page for the artist you were promoting at the show. Click "Activity Logs" from the menu at the top. Then choose either "Store Visit" or "Concert Recap" from the drop down menu.
Go to Top
How do I sign up for a team site?
Signing up for a team site is simple. First, log in. On the main page, you will see a list of all our artists on your left, and then 2 options for each artist. Click "TEAM SITE," and then it will say "You have already logged in. Click here to enter the team site." Once you click that, the application page will come up. Just fill it out, and submit it. Then we will approve you, and you will have access to that area!
Go to Top
Why can't I log into a team site?
If you recently signed up for a team site, you probably are not approved yet. The survey's you fill out we read, and then we approve you for access to the site. If you cannot log into the site, it does NOT mean we rejected you, it just means we haven't got to your survey yet. Please be patient! Usually, the longest it takes us is 3 days. If it has been significantly longer than that, and you are still having problems, please contact us by email or phone, we will be happy to help!
Go to Top
When we're filling out activity logs and it asks for our name at the top, do you mean our real name or our login name?
We need you to put your full name in the ?name? field. First and last please. Otherwise when we get the activity log sent to us (when you submit it), it just lists your username and says "submitted by KillingbirdRules" - we don't always know who that is, so that's why we ask for your name.
Go to Top
I want to fill out the best recap possible. Can you give me an example of a great recap, and tips to make it great?
Glad you asked! Here it is!

Go to Top
Do I need to send pictures with my recap?
It's not required, but we love to see the work you are doing! For each good picture you submit with your recap, you will receive 2 points, with a 3 picture limit. So you can earn an additional 5 points per show! Here is what we mean by "good" pictures:
- NO POSED PICTURES! Posed pictures means fans holding up stickers, posters, and posing for the camera. We like "action" shots.
- Teamers handing out tools, hanging posters, talking to fans, etc. (ACTION!)
- Posters on the walls, table toppers
- Crowd shot of the band and their audience (no more than 1 picture per show please!)
- Check out the pictures below, these are examples of good pictures!

Get creative, and get us those "action" shots!

How do I attach a video clip to my recap?
You'll need to upload it to a video hosting website, like YouTube. Then submit the link to your video in the space provided.
Go to Top
What kind of videos should I attach?
DO SUBMIT:
- Videos of you merching the venue before doors open
- Videos of you or your friends meeting the band
- Videos of you talking to fans about the bands you're promoting

DO NOT SUBMIT:
- Videos of the band's performance
Go to Top
What kind of questions should I ask fans when I'm videotaping their reactions?
Anything that isn't a yes/no question. Some ideas include:
- What did you think of [Capitol artist]?
- How did you find out about [Capitol artist]?
Go to Top
What happens if i don't get my recap in on time?
Recaps are always due 24 hours after the event. You have a grace period of 10 days to submit your recap and earn points. Any recaps submitted after 10 days will not be accepted and no points will be awarded.

What's a "listening party"?
A listening party is an event that you set up where people listen to a new album from a Capitol artist. It's a great way to get new music heard by a lot of potential fans - and it's fun.
Go to Top
How do I set up a listening party?
It's easy:
- Find a venue that you want to have the party at.
- Speak to someone in charge about setting up a party. If they're interested, let us know and we'll provide the tools.
- Pick a date for the party - it could be a pre-existing night like the Saturday Night Britpop Night at a local club or Thursday Night Open Mic at a coffeeshop.
- Advertise your party - make flyers, hang up posters, tell your friends, post a MySpace bulletin, etc.
- Get to the venue early and decorate (put up posters and table toppers, etc.)
- Give the DJ a copy of the album to play during the night.
- Hang out, talk to people in the crowd, see what they think of the album, and take pictures
- Send in your recap.

That's about it, but you can also get creative and include things like themed drink specials, contests/giveaways, etc.
Go to Top
What if I'm not 21?
There are plenty of places to have listening parties other than bars or 21+ clubs. Coffeeshops work, and so do skateparks, cafes, even some stores.
Go to Top
Where should I have it?
That depends on the band you're promoting. If its The Vines, a rock night at a local bar or club would work well. If its Corinne Bailey Rae, a coffeeshop would be a better fit. Setting up a listening party at a pre-existing night will help ensure that fans of that genre will be there. You can even throw your own listening party in a dorm or events center, skate park, etc.
Go to Top
How do I advertise?
You can make flyers and posters and post them around your city, on campuses and at schools, and in stores. You can also advertise online by posting MySpace bulletins or on a blog or sending out an email. Sometimes the venue you're working with will help by advertising the party on their mailing list or print advertising.
Go to Top
What do I get for doing this?
A succesful party is worth 25 points. But you'll also get experience working with venues and setting up evvents, and you'll probably meet a lot of cool people and have fun.
Go to Top
What kind of information do you need?
Take a look at the "Listening Party Recap" Activity Log to get an idea of what we need to know.
Go to Top
What tools will you send me?
We'll send you a copy of the album so you or the DJ can play it for everyone. We'll also send you stickers, posters, and table toppers (if available) so you can decorate the venue and advertise your party. If available, we'll also send you "premium items" like shirts, vinyl, etc. to use as giveaways.
Go to Top
Should I take pictures?
Definitely! Take pictures of how you decorated the venue, people enjoying the music, signing up for the mailing list, etc. The more pictures you send, the better idea we have of how the party went.
Go to Top
What are "giveaways"?
To get people involved in your listening party, you can have contests or giveaways for a prize. There are several ways to do this. You can have everyone at the party put their name in a hat and then pull out a winner. Or you can give a prize to someone who answers a trivia question about the band correctly. We will send you items like shirts, vinyl, etc. to use as prizes.
Go to Top
I'm still not sure about how to set up a listening party. Who should I talk to?
Email us at streetteam@capitolrecords.com or call us in LA at 323.871.5392 or NY at 212.786.8955.
Go to Top
How many points do I get?
You get 5 points for a record store, and 10 points for every other store (such as a clothing store, skate shop, hair salon, etc.). You earn points when you submit a Store Visit Activity Log through the site.
Go to Top
How do I do "lifestyles"?
It's easy! You walk into the store and introduce yourself as a member of the Capitol Records Street Team. Then explain that you're promoting a band, and ask if the store would be willing to let you put a poster in the window, a cling in the window, stickers or postcards by the cash register or front door, etc. Most stores will help you out, although some have corporate policies that prevent them from allowing them to take tools. If the store lets you promote there, write down the name, address, and phone number of the store, and what you did to promote there. (Hint: It helps to take a business card from each place you visit.) Then send us that information in a Store Recap visit, and we'll award you the points. After doing this a few times, you'll get to know people at each store, and they'll know you.
Go to Top
What sort of stores should I go to?
That depends on what sort of band you're promoting. Hurt posters would work well in the window of a tattoo parlor. Saosin stickers could be left in a skate shop. Corinne Bailey Rae postcards would work best at a coffee shop or hair salon. Feel free to ask us if you need more direction on what type of places to visit.
Go to Top
Should I take pictures?
You can if you want, but after a while, all the pictures of stickers next to a cash register are going to start to look the same. But if you see or do something noteworthy (like putting up a poster in a window, or seeing someone wearing a Hurt shirt) feel free to take a picture and send it in with your recap.
Go to Top
What pictures should I take?
See above.
Go to Top
Where do I post the recaps?
On each artist team page, there is a link for the "Activity Logs" page. From the drop-down menu, choose "Store Visit".
